Today’s fancy soda was provided by Holly. It is called “Natural Brew Hand Crafted Ginseng Cola”. The subtitle reads “An invigorating cola made with Chinese Panax Ginseng” and it really is just that, an invigorating cola. Like all our fancy sodas, it is made without corn syrup. I once went to school in a small town in Iowa, and we lived in the middle of corn fields. A few times a day a massive train, matte black, would slowly roll through the campus, cutting me off from my classes. I’d just sit underneath a tree, waiting for it to humble by. Sometimes the air would grow pungent a few minutes before the train appeared, sickly sweet, and you knew you really had to run or else you’d be cut off from the other side of campus. This sticky scent was the smell of corn syrup being trucked out of Iowa. It reminds me of napping in the grass in the spring.
