Our leftover jack-o-lantern has been adopted by some small neighbors of mine. I hesitate to make the comparison, as belittling conceptual artists feels very adolescent, but the particular way my little buddy is working on the pumpkin brought to mind Janine Antoni’s 1992 work “Chocolate Gnaw.” Apologies to Ms. Antoni.

Holiday Briefs: Off-year Voting
November 6th, 2007 · by Andrew · 6 Comments
I believe in voting so much that I never miss a chance to go to the polls. The primary this year was perhaps the most boring one I’ve ever shown up for (one race with only two people to choose between, both of them corrupt) but today’s was a snoozeville too. A bunch of judicial [...]
Visitor of the Day

My conference buddy Teddy Blanks, currently employed at Winterhouse, stopped by for a visit. He didn’t bring a lunch, so we ate in front of him.

On Following Your Heart

Internet celebrity Andrew Sloat brought this flyer back from the AIGA conference on Tuesday.
He gave us a fine recap of a talk by the phenomenal Canadian typographer Marian Bantjes. Bantjes started out her talk by expressing astonishment to be there, and credited it to the fact that four years ago, she quit doing everything she [...]

An Idea Long Overdue

AIGA Conference Report: Wrap Up
October 14th, 2007 · by Andrew · 2 Comments
The whole weekend was a plesant surprise. You can read about the proceedings elsewhere, but overall the speakers were great, the reality show Command-X was genuinely hilarious and ultimately deeply moving (the winning project made me cry, no joke) and I met a ton of really cool designers and design hangers-on. Khoi Vinh and I [...]

AIGA Conference Report 2: Denver Edition
October 12th, 2007 · by Andrew · No Comments
I think the people of Denver are probably really nice, but I don’t know where they are. The streets are straight out of SimCity. Mixed use, clearly zoned, and mostly empty. It’s very sunny. It’s cold in the shade. There’s a place called Lodo that people really like. There’s a street mall.
If I had to [...]

AIGA Conference Report Number One
October 12th, 2007 · by Andrew · 1 Comment
Greetings from Denver. So far, this feels like a cross between a college interview and a regional sales convention. My video went over big (after they presented it wrong once… the left third was missing, so they showed it again. As embarassing as it was, the double exposure and crowd sympathy went miles toward the [...]
